Sunflowers

Exhibited with Circle Arts Lovre Paris, France. In the early summer in Southern Colorado  hundreds of Sunflowers were growing wild along the road. The bright color of the Sunflowers were brilliant against the deep red canyons. I wanted to celebrate their light and movement in my painting.

"International Women's Day"

I was teaching Color Theory at the University of Kentucky. We created a large exhibition for the International Student Center at the University to celebrate "International Day of Women". Students explored the principles of Color Theory in their jeans. Women make up between 60-80 percent of garment workers. These jeans represent color, texture, and make a statement letting students know where their jeans come from and the conditions they experience in the factories.

This is one in a series of 3 paintings representing the beautiful ceramic work of the Nahuatl women in Mexico. Their work in ceramics is famous throughout Mexico. I felt their contribution to the arts should be recognized and celebrated, so I used Egg Tempera. This is the medium of the great Renaissance Masters.

        I was in Mexico developing a collection of Contemporary Folk Art for the Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian. The Nauhuatl Indians create the most beautiful, storied post. I saw this beautiful Nauhuatl woman painting stories of village life on her pots in the market on the cobblestone streets. It was a very hot day. She was very intent on her work. Her kids were all over the place laughing and playing under her watchful eye. I asked her why she painted pots and she looked at me with great surprise! She simply responded, "I paint the pots".  I will never forget all I learned that day in the market. She taught me never to question or judge the life of another. This painting took me 4 months and many, many hours of joy. Her light and simple wisdom guided me.

"Endangered Birds of Mexico"

This mural was completed at "La Ofrenda" a cafe located in the  historic district of Torreon, Mexico. Mexico has a longstanding tradition of mural works which date back to the ancient Aztec, Mayan and other ancient cultures of Mexico. The mural was completed with the help of students, local Artists and community members who shared a common interest in preserving the endangered birds of Mexico.

This image captured the feeling I have when life is simple. You come home, toss your work clothes on a chair and move on with your life. No folding, no organizing, no looking for something to wear the next day. The next day, there they are and you are out the door. I love the everyday feeling this image presented for me.

I walked past this old ranch house on a dirt road along the Laramie River in a remote, small community of 5 houses.The bright blue color of the abandoned ranch.house contrasted with the bright orange poppies and the worn green door that I couldn't resist painting.
